American Board of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology
The ACVNU incorporates an independent training and certifying body, the American Board of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology (ABVNU), constituted to administer, oversee, and regulate residency training and certification of candidate Diplomates and Affiliate Members of the ACVNU. The ABVNU is responsible for all matters related to resident training including the registration of resident candidates, approval of residency programs, review and approval of all residency training requirements, examination of candidate Diplomates and Affiliate Members, and certification of ACVNU Diplomates and Affiliate Members. It is governed by an Executive Training Committee, and all requirements for residency training and candidate certification are detailed in a Certifying Manual.
Joe Bartges, DVM, PhD, DACVIM, DACVN
President
Dr. Joe Bartges is from West Virginia and is a 1983 graduate of Marshall University. After receiving his DVM in 1987 from the University of Georgia, he completed an internship and dual residency in internal medicine and nutrition and a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1993. He joined the faculty at the University of Georgia and in 1997 joined the faculty at the University of Tennessee where he remained until 2014. At Tennessee, he was a Professor of Medicine and Nutrition, held the Acree Endowed Chair of Small Animal Research, and served as interim department head. He was an internist, nutritionist, and academic director at Cornell University Veterinary Specialists in Stamford CT, and was an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Medicine at Cornell University after that. He joined the faculty at The University of Georgia in 2016 and is currently a Professor of Internal Medicine, Interventional Radiology, and Nutrition in the Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery. He is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and is certified in Small Animal Internal Medicine and Nutrition. He is also a founding member of the American College of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology. Dr. Bartges is internationally known for his research and publications in veterinary nephrology and urology and nutrition. He has published over 375 peer-reviewed manuscripts, research abstracts, review articles, and book chapters and is an editor of Nephrology and Urology of Small Animals with Dr. Dave Polzin. He has spoken at over 280 meetings including many international. He is focused on minimally invasive procedures and on clinical research in urinary tract diseases and nutrition.
Mary Labato, DVM, DACVIM
President Elect
A graduate of Tufts’ first veterinary class in 1983, Dr. Mary Labato is a clinical professor and associate chair for graduate programs in the department of Clinical Sciences, Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. She specializes in all areas of internal medicine, with a primary interest in disorders of the kidneys and bladder. Dr. Labato has written numerous manuscript and book chapters within nephrology and urology topics, with special interest in acute kidney injury, renal replacement therapies, and interventional endourology. She is a founding faculty member of the Hemodialysis Academy.
Mark Acierno, MBA, DVM, DACVIM
Secretary/Treasurer
Dr. Mark Acierno received his DVM from Mississippi State University. After an internship in small animal medicine and surgery, he completed an internal medicine residency at Tufts University in 2004. Dr. Acierno spent 12 years at the Louisiana State University developing one of the most advanced nephrology programs in the world. As of January 2017 he is proud to call Midwestern University in Phoenix Arizona "home." His clinical and research interests include hypertension, kidney disease and renal replacement therapies. He also maintains a special interest in personal finance as it relates to veterinarians.
